How to Rename an Affiliate Discount Code

Renaming an affiliate's discount code is a great way to personalize their promotion or align it with a specific campaign, such as a podcast feature or a seasonal event. This guide walks you through how to update an individual affiliate's code directly from their profile.

Step-by-Step Guide to Renaming a Code

  1. Select the Affiliate. From your main merchant dashboard, navigate to the Affiliates section. Find the specific affiliate whose code you wish to change and click on their name to open their profile.

  2. Initiate the Rename Action. In the affiliate's profile details, locate the "Code" or "Discount Code" section. Click the "Rename Code" link next to their current active code.

  3. Enter the New Name. A pop-up window will appear. Enter the New Name for the discount code.

    • Example: If an affiliate is guesting on a podcast, you might change their code to PODCAST15.

  4. Confirm the Change. Click the "Rename" button to finalize. The new code will be generated in your Shopify admin and assigned to the affiliate immediately.

Important Rules to Remember

  • Invalidation of Old Codes: Renaming a discount code instantly invalidates the old code. Any customers attempting to use the previous code at checkout will receive an error. Ensure your affiliate is ready to update their links and posts before you make the change.

  • Shopify Code Reassignment: If the new code name you choose already exists on your Shopify store but is not currently tied to an affiliate, the system will automatically reassign that discount code to the requested affiliate.

  • Code Uniqueness: You cannot rename a code to something that is already in use by another affiliate. If you want to reuse a code currently assigned to a different partner, you must first delete or rename their existing code.

  • Tracking Continuity: While the code name changes, the affiliate's referral history remains intact. All sales made with the new code will continue to be attributed to the same affiliate profile.

What Happens Next?

The affiliate’s dashboard will update in real-time to show their new code. We recommend sending a quick message to your affiliate once the change is complete so they can update their social media bios or active promotions to avoid any "invalid code" errors at checkout.
