How to set product-specific commissions (Pro plan)

Set unique percentage commission rates for specific products and variants.

Written by Milos

How Product-Specific Commissions Work

Every affiliate group has a default percentage commission. Product-specific commissions override that default for the products and variants you add, so a high-margin item can pay more and a low-margin item can pay less.

You add individual products or specific variants. Simple Affiliate stores the override per variant. Leave a field blank to keep using the group's default rate for that variant.

Availability: This feature is exclusive to the Pro plan and above. The group must use Percentage commission. Fixed-amount (flat rate) groups cannot set product or collection overrides.

Collection-wide overrides use the same screen. See How to set collection-specific commissions (Pro plan).

How to Set Product-Specific Commissions

  1. Open the group. In Simple Affiliate, go to Groups and open the group you want to edit. Select the Commission tab.

  2. Open product and collection commissions. Scroll to Product and collection specific commission and click Set product and collection commissions. Save the group first if the button is disabled.

  3. Add products or variants. In Variant-specific priority rules, click Add products. The Shopify picker opens so you can choose whole products or individual variants.

  4. Filter the product list. In the picker, search by product name. Use Add filter to narrow by Categories, Collection, Status, Types, Tags, or Vendors. Check the products or variants to include, then click Add.

  5. Enter the rates. Each row is one variant, titled as product name then variant name. Type a percentage in Commission. If the group has first-time customer commission enabled, a second column appears for that rate. Empty fields keep the group default, shown as the field placeholder.

  6. Save. Click Save in the unsaved-changes bar. You must save or discard before adding or removing more products.

Filter Products You Already Added

After products are on the list, use Search by title or variant ID to find a row. If your catalog has product types, Filter by product type limits the list to those types.

Bulk Edit or Remove Products

  1. Select rows. Check the variants you want to change. The header shows how many are selected.

  2. Edit commission in bulk. Use Bulk Edit Commission to set the same percentage on every selected variant. If first-time customer commission is enabled, Bulk Edit New Customer Commission sets that column the same way.

  3. Remove products. Click Remove [N] products, then confirm. This deletes the overrides. Those variants go back to the group default (or a collection override, if one applies).

Save after bulk edits. Remove is disabled while rates are unsaved; save or discard first, then remove.

Important Rules to Remember

  • Percentage only: Product and collection overrides are not available when the group uses a fixed amount per order.

  • Variant wins: Variant-specific commission overrides the group default and any collection-specific commission.

  • Blank means default: An empty rate field uses the group's default percentage for that column.

  • Save before add or remove: The Add product and remove actions stay disabled while the page has unsaved rate changes.

  • ⚠️ Future referrals only: New rates apply to referrals created after you save. Existing referrals keep the rates captured when they were created.

What Happens Next?

Affiliates in the group earn the variant rate on those products. Everything else still uses the group default, unless a collection override applies. Review the next few orders on the Sales report to confirm the rates.
